Do touch
When I was a kid I went to the library on a weekly basis to get piles of books. It’s not until a few years later, as e-books became more and more popular, that I first heard about the slow decline of physical books. Nothing changed for me, as I was attached to the experience of a physical book, the rustling of its paper and its smell. At the time that I went to the Graphic Design department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, my attention went more to the tactile aspects of books. Memories of my mother making her own paper started to appear. Now, again a couple of years later, I see the furniture of knowledge has remained to be everywhere. It makes me wonder: Why is the tactility of books so important to the user and their experience?
What does ‘tactility’ actually mean? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, tactility is a ‘responsiveness to stimulation of the sense of touch and the capability of being felt or touched.’ Reading a book is not only you touching the book, the book also communicates back to you: ‘I sense both the object and (simultaneously) my flesh affected by the object. The experience is simultaneously active and passive: touching I am touched.’
A book gives you several tactile interactions: Picking up the book you feel its spine, cover and back cover. You open the book, browse through it, let the layers of paper slide over your thumb, feel the paper of one individual page. Maybe you press your nose against the pages. Interestingly in handling the book you mainly use your hands. Sonneveld explains it like this: ‘The hands are symbolic because they represent active touch: we reach out, touch objects and by moving them (caressing, lifting, swinging, squeezing), we experience their materiality (texture, weight, weight distribution, hardness). The rest of our body is more passively touched.’
As the complete replacement of physical books by the screen has not happened, it seems that besides the content, this tactility is important in different ways.
First of all, austerity plays a role, books are always published in a limited amount. Depending on editions size and used materials, it can become something of value or a collector’s item. Content is still important, because the interest in it as a collector’s item differs, an old edition of William Shakespeare is more wanted than those of lesser known writers. Time also takes its toll, because the more time passes, the more books are consumed by it: they are thrown away, damaged or lost. Supply is decreasing and the demand stays the same or even increases, what creates scarcity. Eventually the content becomes less important as it becomes an artifact.
Ludovico writes that there is a trend in traditional print publishing where they present their products more like valuable objects then as ordinary books. They use the tactile qualities of paper as a way to stand out in comparison to the digital world, and to cope with the shrinking customer base. As far as I know, people who see books as collector’s items and pay attention to the tactile qualities of paper are a minority, but I think this is indeed important. Ludovico also states that a number of products need to be re-invented in some way to still make sense in print. In graphic design re-invention is already happening, for example by using newspaper layouts with unusual content for its form.
Yet these are not the only pros of print in comparison to the screen. People like to physically own a book and not to be restricted by problems that might occur with its digital counterpart. An e-book, can be taken away by the provider and you are limited to the capabilities of the device you read on. With growing incentives of rejecting technology, books allow you to be ‘offline’.
Finally, the tactile characteristics of a book add to the experience of reading in contrast to reading off a screen. Ludovico states: ‘What is missing, much more than nostalgia, is a small perceptual universe that is instinctually unfolded every time the physical medium is used, while it is misdirected if not negated in its new screen- based embodiment.’
I agree with Ludovico that the physicality of a book and all that comes with it is the biggest contrast to the screen, because with books all senses are stimulated more. Touch is central in experiencing books. You can assume by seeing handmade paper that the feeling of it will be soft, but you have to touch it to be certain. Touch creates a bridge between the outside world and you as an individual, through experience. “With touch, an organism that can feel itself while sensing what is other than itself; it is on this basis that other senses can distinguish the object and the subject.”
The tactile qualities of print makes us communicate with books and establish a certain bond between ourselves and the objects around us that communicate back to us. To prove this point: ‘Traditional print tactility gives information on different levels, and the process of paper selection is, in fact, still an important part of quality publishers’ work. It gives information about colour (sight), texture (touch) and odour (smell) that is, possibly consistent with the whole of the work. If we are already familiar with a book, the texture of its cover unawarely gives us information about its content (confirming what we are about to read) even before we open it, and eventually we would be able to recognise certain books while being blindfolded. Every added element (lamination of any type, hollow punches, special piece of information, special inks, other materials integrated in the cover) is not just an additional piece of information, but a further experience for both sight and touch, and so further information.’
It’s well established that there is a connection between memory and smell, but perhaps there is also a connection between memory and touch, as it’s one of the first senses that we really use as a child. The fact that I so vividly remember the texture of the paper my mother made, tells me how well tactility can talk. This reminds me not to take paper or books for granted, but try to experience it fully. Books on a screen can’t match that for me. As Ludovico said so well ‘paper is flesh, screen is metal.’
De groene halmen splijten met elke stap verder open, ze wringen zich tussen mijn tenen. Ik versnel mijn pas totdat ik huppelend elke keer iets hoger spring. Mijn tenen, mijn wreef en vervolgens mijn bovenbeen roldt over de aarde mijn handen omsluiten mijn voeten, de aarde graaft zich onder mijn nagels. Ik hoor geluid naderen.
Mijn ogen openen zich, langzaam het licht doorlatend, ik voel het lichaam van mijn vriend. Zijn knieen in die van mij, zijn buik om mijn rug. Ik ga anders liggen wat hem ook zijn ogen doet openen. “Goeiemorgen”, “Hmmm” mijn vriend draait zich op zijn buik en duwd zijn hoofd onder het kussen. Zo blijft hij nog een tijdje liggen. Ik bestudeer hoe zijn oogbal zo nu en dan beweegt achter zijn oogleden en vraag me af of dat ook zo is als hij echt slaapt. Ik sta op, ga naar de wc en zet daarna koffie. In de tijd dat de koffie door het koffiezetapparaat loopt begint er langzaam wat meer leven te komen onder de dekens. Opeens komt er een hoofd te voorschijn, “is er koffie?”. Ik schenk zonder iets te zeggen twee koppen koffie in, één melk en één zonder, loop mijn vriend tegemoet, de kop zonder melk aanreikend. Die dag schijnt de zon en is het voor het eerst sinds tijden weer daadwerkelijk warm. Laatst had ik een gesprek met een jongen uit het zuiden van Frankrijk die zich aan het beklagen was over dat de zon hier wel scheen, maar geen warmte afgaf en dat de zon daardoor niet in de ogen van mensen twinkelt. Mijn ogen overigens wel zei hij. Toch knap dat hij zijn beklag zo soepel over kon laten gaan in geflirt, misschien is dat iets frans. Dit is zo’n dag dat iedereens ogen glinsteren en vrouwen met veels te frisse jurkjes en blote kuiten zich naar buiten wagen. Daar ben ik er vanzelfsprekend één van. Ter gelegenheid hiervan besluiten we naar Amelisweerd te gaan. Laurens had me voor mijn verjaardag een dagje kanoën gegeven. Eigenlijk was ik er al vanuit gegaan dat het er niet meer van zou komen, aangezien het cadeau van vorige lente was en het tussendoor nog uit was gegaan.
De fietstocht, is een lange en al helemaal met mij achterop. De wind is nog fris. We stappen af, bij de kanoverhuur en maken voor de vorm nog even “ruzie” over of we in een kajak of een kano gaan. Aangezien het voor mijn verjaardag is, zijn we het er eigenlijk al over eens geworden dat het zoals ik wil, een kano wordt. Eerst stap ik de kano in, vervolgens stapt hij ook in en met het zitten houdt het wiebelen van de boot op. We zwaaien nog even naar de man van de kanoverhuur en dan peddelen we steeds verder de stilte in.
Plons! In cirkels verwijderd het water zich van me. Laurens staat me vanaf de boot argwanend aan te kijken. “Is het koud An?” “Valt wel mee” zeg ik bibberend. Hij moet lachen, ik ben niet heel overtuigend. Ik zwem naar de kant en knijp mijn haren uit in het water. “Kom je?” “Ik weet het niet hoor.” Ik sta aan de rand van een gigantische grasveld. Laurens staat nog steeds in de boot. “Ik ga hoor!” Ik begin te lopen, te draven, steeds sneller door het hoge gras. De korenbloemen die tussen het gras staan maken samen een breedt palet van kleuren, die door het toenemen van mijn snelheid steeds meer een geheel worden.

Daar lig ik dan, zo dicht bij de grond dat ik de aarde zou kunnen inademen. Opeens krijg ik een kletsnatte knuffel “daar ben ik!” zegt Laurens vrolijk, “het duurde zo lang, dat ik de kou overwonnen heb en het water ook ben in gegaan, maar gaat het met je voet? Het is helemaal dik.” “Ja, gaat wel” zeg ik. Laurens helpt me terug naar de rand van het grasveld, gaat het water in en peddelt de kano naar me toe. Ik stap voorzichtig in, “nu ga ik wel achter” zegt hij grappend. Ik glimlach. Dan peddelen we weg. De halmen blijven roepen, ik zie ze nog net vanuit mijn ooghoek, dan verdwijnen ze uit mijn blikveld.
